Exercise physiology is a healthcare discipline focused on the use of exercise as medicine. Exercise physiologists are university-qualified health professionals who design individualised exercise programs to manage chronic conditions, improve physical function, and support long-term health outcomes. They work across a wide range of conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer, mental health conditions, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Both professions use exercise as a key part of their practice, but with different emphases. Physiotherapists focus on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions through manual therapy, exercise, and other modalities. Exercise physiologists specialise in designing exercise programs for the long-term management of chronic diseases and improving general health and fitness. At PhysiCo, our physiotherapists are trained in exercise physiology principles, so you can access both areas of expertise in one appointment.
Exercise physiology is beneficial for people living with chronic health conditions, those recovering from injury or surgery, and individuals looking to improve their overall health and fitness. Conditions commonly managed include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, depression, and respiratory conditions. Exercise physiology is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
A referral is not required to book an exercise physiology appointment. You can contact the clinic directly to arrange a consultation. If you are accessing services through a GP-managed care plan, your GP may be able to provide a referral that covers a number of subsidised sessions under Medicare. We accept all health funds.
Yes. Exercise physiology is specifically designed to help people manage a wide range of chronic health conditions. Evidence supports the use of structured exercise programs for conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, asthma, and cancer. Your exercise physiologist will design a program based on your specific condition, health status, and goals.
Your first session typically includes a health assessment covering your medical history, current medications, lifestyle factors, and physical activity levels. Your exercise physiologist will assess your strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and functional movement relevant to your condition and goals. Based on this assessment, a personalised exercise program is developed. Follow-up sessions focus on progressing the program, monitoring your response to exercise, and supporting your ongoing motivation and adherence.
Many private health insurance policies cover exercise physiology sessions. The level of cover depends on your specific policy and fund. We offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming so you can process your rebate at the time of your appointment. Contact your health fund to confirm your entitlements before booking.
We are a Bupa Network Provider, however, we accept all Health funds, Medicare referrals, Workcover, Third Party, DVA, NDIS, and International Insurance.
