What is Cranio-Sacral Therapy and How does it work?
Stress, trauma and illness are things that everyone will encounter at some point in their life, in varying degrees. It may gradually accrue when we have an argument with someone or receive some worrying news. Or maybe you suffer from a chronic health condition.
All those factors can build up overtime, and contribute to us feeling unwell, exhausted and run-down.
How we deal with what life throws at us is different for each person. We might be triggered into fight or flight mode more often than we think, causing our systems to contract. Parts of our bodies tighten as we adopt defensive postures, our breathing gets quicker and shallower, our digestive system shuts down. Moreover, we struggle to think clearly when we are in this survival mode.
Craniosacral Therapy can help shift us out of this state, into a more relaxed mode of being, allowing our body’s to function optimally.
Craniosacral therapy was based on the idea that the body is connected at all levels. The cranio-sacral system is the membrane and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord (aka the central nervous system). Our body is heavily influenced by the cranio-sacral system. Therefore, restrictions in cranial mobility or neural tension can create a barrier to the health performance of the central nervous system and the body. Therapists feel for these barriers, enhance the Cranio-sacral system to overcome those barriers.
So, what happens in a session?
After a case history is taken, the therapist will usually treat you on a treatment table, where you can lie down and relax. Gentle hand-holds are carried out on the body. Thus, sensations such as spasms, tingling or reflexive movements may be felt, as the body responds to the therapist’s touch.
The therapist may pick up tension, restrictions or distortions in your system, all of which may be indicative of ill health.
The restrictions are gently released allowing the body to find its way back to wholeness, fluidity and balance.
